hey i got a 2008 6.4 and it blows out alot of coolant out of the hold tank any body know why it does it

You don't need to have either of those thing to have compression pushing into the cooling system.

yea but ive had diesel mechanics look at it and they think its just getting hot and bubbling out bc those caps go bad they dont think its the head gasket

Has anyone tested the cooling system for pressuring up?

That's easy. Do that, confirm pressuring up. Can narrow it down with cylinder compression test, and leakdown test. Do head gaskets. While heads are off, I'd pressure test the heads for cracks. And inspect cylinder walls for cracks or pinholes.

yes there for a while id fill to the cold mark line and it wuld puke it out and they said just let it go and quite adding it and see what happens so i did and it quites puking antifreeze out about inch and half below the cold fill line

I've seen odd levels on engine oils, but never coolant. Especially one with a remote surge tank. Test for combustion in the cooling system. It's cheap and easy. Just leaving it at this point is not the answer. But its your truck.

well im still havin trouble i fixed the cap not losing any coolant out of it now but i still smell a strong oder of antifreeze when i run it kinda of hard. theres nothing leaking around the heads, theres nothing in the oil, and i cant smell any in the exhaust is there a way my heater cooler could be bad already

Your head gaskets are toast, get some head studs new gaskets put them in and be done with it before you roach your motor.

(Your head gaskets are toast, get some head studs new gaskets put them in and be done with it before you roach your motor. ) r u sure?

(With my 6.4 I had coolant issues for quite a while with the last one being water pump cavitation. The tech said the pump was hitting the cover and replaced the pump only.) i read this on another site i really dont think its the head gaskets thats the first thing everyone jumps to but as i start reading other sites theres alot of coolant issues with them

I've seen a lot of 2008 6.4's blow head gaskets.
I think they changed the gaskets after 2008 sometime.

Heres the thing though, it's not really the head gaskets that blow, it's the TTY bolts holding the heads down.
Depending on how bad it is, I've heard of some guys saying to buy a set of studs, and just put new studs in without removing everything.
I assume you would loosen all the factory bolts, but leave them just a little snug, then swap in the studs one by one. Then follow tightening procedure.
Thats how it was explained to me anyhow.

I might have stretched mine a bit... not sure. There was a few runs I did, where I hit over 60 lbs of boost, and she puked out coolant.
I put it back to stock power, went and got a coolant flush, and the coolant level hasn't budged now in 4 months.
And that is with quite a few times holding it to the floor at 40 psi boost.

So I am also faced with a decision, do the job properly, or cheap out and just do the studs, but really thats all thats wrong...

I'm sure he's like I'm am, neither of us ever seen a 6.4 with blown head gaskets so he's pulling the wool over your eyes and I'm gonna take your money. If you dont think its blown head gaskets I suggest you come up with a better explanation for your dilema and stop asking us for advise.

The last good used 6.4 motor I bought as a replacement cost over $8500 from salvage.
