Hello everyone. I have a beauty of a Zuk ready for a turbo diesel swap. Ideally i am looking for horsepower and torque that can take names as well as drive on the highway comfortably.

I am putting 32x11.5r15 Kumho Road Ventures on her for on and off road convenience.

This truck will be my everyday driver so i would like her to be comfortable around 75mph on the highway. I know a lot of Zuk owners are using the VW TDI motors and i did find one out of a 2006 Jetta 1.9T TDI that i can pick up but before i do, does the Duramax or Cummins heavier motors fit in the ZUK? if they do, are they too heavy for such a small truck? I love the sound of them!

BIG QUESTION : i am planning on buying the engine and before install i would like to, over the course of a few months, upgrade the engine, clutch and tranny. Can you provide parts for the recommended engine you've chosen.

Look at the Cummins R2.8 if you are looking for more power and torque than a TDI engine.

If you are planning on using a TDI engine I would probably go with an ALH as the PD engine is problematic...

In my opinion a 6.6L Duramax or 5.9-6.7L Cummins is way too much weight and power for a Sammy!!!

Either way post up your results and swap build!!!

What were these engines originally used in? One of these would be neat to use as most everyone uses a B.

To the OP, I'd think a Cummins 4BT would be the ticket. Parts are easy to come buy and will make great power. I don't think the TDI would be a bad option just not sure how a front wheel drive engine would work in a rear wheel drive vehicle.

Guys put the TDI engines in Sammys a lot, seems to be a good combo. I think even a 4BT would be pretty heavy and the control of the CR R2.8 would probably be better off road...

I do not know what Cummins has used the 2.8L engine in previously... Supposedly this is the first or the Cummins Repower engines and others will be added in the future. I would imagine the R5.0 V8 and R6.7 I6 would be on the horizon...

I currently have a 1987 Suzuki samuria and i am in the process of gathering my motor swap parts up too
If you want a diesel look into VW diesels and acme adapters makes alot of the conversion parts
here is my 1.9 TDI motor

2.8L Cummins Specs
Configuration: Inline 4 cylinder
Valvetrain: OHV
Weight: Approx. 475 lbs, not including emissions equipment
Horsepower: 210 hp @ 3,600 rpm
Torque: 385 lb-ft @ 1,800 rpm

4BT Cummins Specs
Configuration: Inline 4 cylinder
Aspiration: Turbocharged, non-intercooled
Valvetrain: OHV, 2 valves per cylinder
Weight: 745 - 782 lbs w/ oil

Dry weight of a 1.9 TDI (AHF) with AC and DMF (but no clutch) according to my digital scale is 361 lbs

jeep motor weights:
2.5L 4cyl, AX-5, and a NP231 weigh 540 lbs. The CG of the whole assembly is just about at the back of the engine block.
edit: (AX-5)

I wonder if the Mercedes diesel that everybody uses would fit? I know they'll go in tototas.

I was thinking the same thing on the Mercedes engine. An OM606 or even one of the 605 inline 5 cylinders. The later years had aluminum heads, direct injection, and a mechanical A-pump will bolt right on.

After watching this though, the thought of a very street able 400HP from an A-pumped ALH engine would be my choice plus the adapter plates available now make everything a bolt in. Mechanically A-pump it and eliminate any wiring issues.

The mercedes are indirect up until the common rail years. om606,603,617, they are all indirect.

I wonder what the physical dimensions of a om606 is vs. a 4bt or the 2.8l.

The om606 can produce some serious power and has a stout bottom end, but they are not lugging machines, they like high rpm. So what you plan on doing with the sammy makes a difference as well.

Yea but they sound just like a revved up 6BT!!!!!!!!

I have a 87 sammi. I just started pulling the factory power plant and swapping to a 4 cyl Perkins and adding a turbo. Going to use the factory drive train. Transfer case has a 167% reduction upgrade.

Eesh... You better never drive that thing on a rainy day. You'll be hydroplaning all over the road....

Is there anything special you have to do to change this from a front wheel drive motor to a rear wheel drive motor?

You just remove the trans axle from the vw engine, then use an adapter to mate the vw engine to the zuki trans. The engine gets turned 90* from original placement in the vw. I'm sure there's a lot of other little things involved like specific starters and alike but that's the meat of it.

The 1.9 vw tdi is a very popular swap Bodie Armstrong did one a few years back he is a member here maybe he will chime in.. I myself just dont think its worth the effort ive owned half a dozen over the last couple years with various swaps and engine configurations.. the 1.6l, 2.0 or 4.3l v6 swaps trump all imo..

What vehicle is the 4.3l v6 engine from and do they sell kits to install this engine in a Sammy? I am very interested in adding a turbo. Would you suggest that with this engine?

Space is limited with the 4.3 so I would say probably a no on the turbo.. The 4.3 was used in s-10 and jimmy suv's
