I'm looking to get back into a Cummins after 5 years. I'm looking at a 98 12 valve with about 190k miles. It's an extended cab long bed 4x4, 5 speed, SRW. I haven't got to look at the truck yet, but what is the probability of it having 4.10 gears? I'm trying to stay away from 4.10's because of the awful fuel mileage. Thanks

12V Cummins 5 speed 2500 come with a dana 80 and in MOST cases 3.54 gears.

I thought 4.10's were just a factory option, and standard option was 3.55? I do regret swapping to 4.10's now, and first bit of "extra" money is going into swapping back.

Pretty 3.55s are standard, but 5 speed does imply a tow rig this 4.10s. When you look at the truck it should say on a placard on the glovebox or the hood near the latch.
