Which is better? On the Hwy, why would an Auto get worse MPG than a hand shaker?

I think that autos get less milage because they inherantly slip. Even when they are locked up there is alot of parts still moving that create a parisitic friction.

Thats my theory, I try no to get very far into an auto......they have to many moving parts for me.

"Better" is subjective.

At a given hp, an auto will be faster.

A clutch is (almost always) cheaper than building an auto to hold the same power level.

Either can hold plenty of power.

I like sticks, so I say they are "better"

Auto has a higher overdrive ratio, so they will normally get better mileage on the highway. The 47rh/re have a .69:1 overdrive ratio. Cant remember the sticks, but they are lower geared so they turn more RPM.

I can get 22mpg pretty easy if Im on the highway, and 19 or so around town if I keep my foot out of it, so you cant really convince me a stick gets any better.

That's my point exactly...... the Auto has a slightly higher ratio and yet ALL of mine were/are crappy on the innerstate. I wonder if a little dash of Pro-Lock would help?
