I noticed the lobes on my Hamilton 183/220 camshaft were gray in color, while the journals were polished. Is there some sort of coating on the lobes? if so what's it's purpose?
 
It is parkerization. It helps oil and prelube cling to the lobes during break-in so that it is a happy tire smoking time and not a tappet/lobe killing time.

Without it lubrication is not as gauranteed
