this is going to be my Cat 3116 swap into a 1972 IH 3/4 ton truck. back story is this, OEM drive-train died and i wanted to do a different swap. Cummins is done to often, detroit is not doable due to emissions, i dislike V style diesels. so i went with a Cat, i can make it look like a Cummins. Pics will follow soon

here is the before pics of the OEM drive-train

I like Cats, but that yellow paint is too expensive for me. I will stick to beige and red parts ;)

Yes the yellow paint is $$$$$$$$ but it is different make makes enough torque to make me happy, fokr now anyways.

Sweet binder looks like it had a 345. I've got a 67 IH 3/4 ton 4x4. There's a reason cummins get swapped in. I like cat motors (I work at cat large power engine plant) but 3116s are a pretty bad engine.

yes it was a 345 good eye :) and the 3116 in a light truck like this it should be just fine

i would have if i could have found one, and i got a sweet deal on the kitty

you might be better off using a shortened medium duty frame with the axles and adding your int body to that

i thouhgt about it, but no room in the backyard, and i dont have a garage

Lafayette, IN 3500 and 3600 engines. I work in 3600 gas are 11.8 inch bore and diesels are 11 inch or 280mm. inline 6s and 8s, Vee engines are 12s, 16s. A 16 diesel makes about 7000 hp and 47000 lb ft of torque at 1000 rpm.

I'm sure you've seen plenty of 3508s in the D11s

The 3116 is just not a great engine due to the fuel system and doesn't make any power for the size. You can get injectors and all the other typical diesel hop up stuff but injectors are real expensive and hard to time with out a special tool from Cat. D5s use those and they seem to window the block prematurely compared to other engines. Good luck since your already pretty committed.

thank you. the goal of this buid is fuel economy. If i did my math right i should be in the 20-22 MPG highway range and 15 mpg city

FWIW, I use to drive a tow truck with a 3116... it was more of a dog than an early 7.3. It was also nearly impossible to start on a cold day without new batteries or with a charger on it. You also had to cycle the intake heater several times before it would even consider starting.

How do you turn up a 3116 cat - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

IMO, a cat 3116 is never going to put out the power a 5.9 will, or be as reliable. There is a reason the cummins ISB is so popular for these projects.
