dana 60 passenger side axle shafts

Is there supposed to be any play with the inner passenger side axel shaft(the one that goes into the spider gears)? I got my cad shift fork assymbly out of the axle and moved the shift collar over(the the right) and my inner axle shaft has about .25-.50 inch side play. Is this normal?

It should not float that much. Make sure you have the bushing at the inner side of the outer axle shaft. If that is ok, I would make sure your RH lower ball joint does not need replacing. I had a friends's truck that was having problems with 4x4. Ended up being the RH lower ball joint was out, which pulled the outer shaft out enough and the shift collar could not catch both axle halves. Final check would to be pulling the differential cover.
