Exhaust brake disabled in ECM?

Ok been trying to figure out why my exhaust brake has never worked since I've owned the truck (2 year ago). Been working with a local mechanic friend recently and he mentioned he had seen them disabled in the ECM at the time his scan tool was not cooperating to check my truck out.

Took him my truck last week to install my Steed Speed manifold, clean my VGT, and try to get the brake to work once again. In the recent months he had hired a new tech who has an Autel scan tool. He was able to communicate with my ECM and see that my exhaust brake is not enabled, but when he tried to enable it it gives an error message?

Anybody seen this before? Got any idea's for a solution? Would really love to get the brake working because I will be towing my 12 valve pretty regularly soon to the drag strips.

Thanks!

Hey, I see Happy Birthday wishes are in order!

We have to enable/disable the brake on the commercial units all the time.

I'm not sure how the Chrysler programming works, but wheel brake events can disable the engine brake to prevent a skid/jack knife on commercial engines.

I have heard this one other time, when I worked at the dealership, I never seen the option to do this with wiitech, but also I never looked. I have a friend who has a truck that the brake has never worked on, swapped turbos, didn't fix it, put a new switch in it and still doesn't work. Then someone told him that the dealership could disable it and enable it. Might be worth a shot to go to the dealer, but make sure you talked to a tech that actually knows whats going on.

Apparently this is going to be my last resort

I plan to talk with my local stealership next week once I have the truck back to see what they have to say and how much they would be charging for 5 minutes worth of work.

Do you have the dash button or is your truck a early cab and chassis model?

Talked to the "shop foreman" at my local dealer a week ago Kyle, and he was an absolute idiot to say the least. He claimed my issue wasn't in my ECM, but It was with my tuner. Said that my tuner had it disabled and didn't know what he was doing (FirePunk). He told me he would have to reflash my ECM to enable the brake, and it would cause me to lose my EFI tuning. Then as soon as I flashed my EFI back on I'd lose my brake again. Was very hard not to turn and walk away when he said Lavon didn't know what he was doing as a tuner.

The idiot at Martin Dodge in bowling Green told me that they wouldn't replace the torn fan wiring on mine because we had just installed a 2" KORE lift and "we see that all the time".

I got out before cops were called.

Simple enough, the EFI guru's should be able to tell us what can and cannot be done in regard to the brake.

I hung out with the FP guys a lot at Rocky Top last weekend, Lavon said he had seen my post's either here or on FB and had already checked my EFI tune file from when I ordered back in March and the VGT was enabled. He had me do a datalog and send to him, but I didn't get it emailed out until late Friday night.

Dealership can enable/disable the brake. Sometimes when ECMs are replaced, the exhaust brake function isn't enabled. Your button will light up, but the turbo won't even attempt to close down. It takes all of 2 minutes to enable it.

It would be nice to have a list of tuner friendly dealerships. Not that they will do warranty work, but just that they aren't going to act like fools over something simple.

Lavon had me send him some datalog's this week.... we spoke very briefly this afternoon...he's going to send me some hobbit magic to reset the ECM then have me download my CSP5 tune again. Here's to hoping it work!! :rockwoot: :rockwoot: :rockwoot:

good deal. I had already tuned mine with EFI Live. I just went by the dealership my buddy works at and he hooked up to it. It took a minute to find the option, but it wasn't enabled when they replaced the ECM before I bought the pickup.

If you swap that junk POS good for nothing turbo off of it, you wouldn't have to worry about this.... #justsayin

This is interesting. I just sent an autocal to FL because he had issues with his previous tuner. The trucks turbo brake never worked. After the flash the turbo brake now works great. The incorrect base file can cause the turbo brake to not work. Most tuners slu+ out the same base file for all their tunes. This works majority of the time but is not the correct way to write tunes. This may not be relevant to your issue but worth noting.
