Extension length on dial indicator for timing?

I need to buy an extension for my dial indicator, how much is sticking out of the delivery valve adapter when the dial indicator is in there? Please indicate if you have a Miller or Snap on tool also. Thanks-Nick
 
How much of the rod needs to be sticking out of the delivery valve adapter to reach inside and time the pump? I'm missing the extension for my dial indicator.
 
IIRC, a 1" extension stem is too short and a 2" stem is on the long side but usable. I'm going to guess that the original should be somewhere around 1.5".

BTW, I have the Miller kit.
