Has anyone ever attempted to fit one of these on a 12v? And if so what would it require to do? :ft:

Originally coming from driving a duramax I loved this turbo and would be very happy if I could make one of these fit on my 12v

I ran one about 4 years back or so....actually was a 4088R since the 94 wasn't released at the time....

What do you want to know? Requires a T4 manifold or adapter, you'll have to adapt to your downpipe, or fab one, and you'll need to tie into the heater hoses for coolant lines, and make your oil line work. It requires a restrictor fitting in the oil feed IIRC as well.

I have some pics around here somewhere...

I also was looking into the 4088 how did you like that? And what were you running setup wise with it?

So I would need a T4 mani and downpipe for it, would it require new hoses kinda like what they did for the gt37r? Any pictures of your setup would be awesome!!

I think I may want to dive into trying this as a little project to try something different than the normal s300 or s400 etc everyone else usually turns to, and get the whistle they are known for in my 12v.

The GT37 hoses should work if you put a T4 factory style manifold on it....those weren't available back when I did it, so I had to fab everything. Manifold, DP, lines, etc, etc. Built it all.

They surge a little on a 12v....but mine was an Auto with 36" tires and 3.55's when I ran the old 4088R....with your stick, you should be able to drive around the surging.

They do sing a nice tune on the turbine side....lots of whistle!

Wondering where I could find a factory style T4 mani from, or would something like a 3 piece mani be sustainable for the setup?

Thats pretty crazy that you built the set up from scratch, ever think about doing something like that again for a certain $ amount?

Any of the t4 manifold would work....when I said factory I meant factory style...

The one I had the flange was cut off, and a t4 foot was welded on with a straight side exit....then I built a spacer to put it out where it needed to be to get the exhaust out of there, welded an external wastegate flange to that, and made all the smoke go to the right places, and the clean air head the right directions. Oil lines and water lines were braided stainless and connected inline to the heater hoses and tranny heat exchanger....

I could fab it again, of course it would be easier nowadays....
Chris

So I should be fine getting a T-4 mani than and than I would need a spacer to make it fit properly? And is there another option for a wastegate now or would I need to do something along the line of what you did?

Also how much boost were you pushing with it?

Well, now there are options like Engineered Diesel's watesgate spacer....

T4 manifold....spacer may or may not help to get more room for the exhaust....since I built my own downpipe and had a completely different manifold style, who knows...

I ran mine at 38psi....I'm not a fan of pushing a charger I just paid $1650 for on an engine that no one had tried said charger on....

I def agree with keeping the turbo at a decent boost level and nothing ridiculous especially for the $$.. Looks like I got some research to do to get this project on a roll.

I really appreciate your help with this and it convinced me to give it a shot on doing it.

List of things I will need to get now is a T4 mani, I am thinking a ATS pulse should be sufficient. Maybe look into ED's wastegate spacer to see if I need it or won't. I will more than likely call garrett or some other turbo specialist to see if the G37R adapter kit will be compatible with the 4088 or 4094 and if it is I will order that as well or get the pieces needed that the kit won't cover.

The GT37R adapter kit won't work....MAYBE the lines from the kit, but nothing else. Save the money, and fab them up.

I'll dig up my pics tomorrow for you!

Chris

Ahhh ok, I will need to see what needs to be fab'd and see if my skills are good enough to do it that might be my only downfall at the moment.

Thanks again for the pictures

The gt37/40 turbine wheel is not the finest.

For a single anyway.

Well in time I eventually plan on a compound setup but wanted to try the gt40 out.. What makes you say that though? What is wrong with it as a single?

Do you mean both wheels the 37 and 40? I believed them to be different from each other....

And I have to say, that I wasn't really impressed with the GT4088R....BUT I was having serious pump problems at the time, and haven't tried the charger again...

Chris

I've been running a 4094R as a secondary for a while. Several friends tried them as singles and had surge issues, but it has been the best secondary I have used. Zero problems, and the plumbing is nothing to worry about.

I think you may be one of a few "individuals" that have tried more chargers than me Ron!!!!

Glad that setup is working for you!!!

Oh cool, do you think I would be able to control the surging since I have a manual? And maybe I can just do a twin setup with the gt40 than to make it work. What are you running with that setup, a smaller one than the gt40 or larger?

Here is a pic of a 4094R on a 12 valve 1st gen. Its a pretty simple install.

Obviously they are different. Wasn't impressed with the 3788r nearly as much as I was with the 3782r.

I am running a 4094r as a secondary as well.

What size turbine housing are you running? I am also looking to run a 4094r as a single, but on a 06 CR. Thanks.
