A friend of mine just got his honed block back from the machine shop and I'm not sure if the hone job is done correctly. The shaded areas do not have many cross hatches. It does not feel like they are recessed. A bore gauge would be the best way to determine that, but we don't have one. They are on both side of the cylinders at the top, but I just snapped pics of one side to give you an idea what it looks like. Let me know what you think because I'll be taking my block soon. Thanks!

You could use use a top ring and check the gap all the way down the cylinder.

So check that and run it? It just looked odd to me, but I've never had a block honed before.

That's pretty normal for a used honed cylinder. If they honed it until the shaded areas were gone the piston skirt to cylinder wall clearance would be pretty loose.

That's pretty normal for just a hone job. That's where the piston ring is changing direction.

You would have thought they would have at very least finished honed the block.

you are correct, it was not bored only honed. No, I don't believe a torque plate was used when honing it. The pics posted above are of my block, Craig was just nice enough to post them because the shaded area had us a little concerned. Thanks for everyone's input

Your absolutely wasting your time with a torque plate when using a flexible hone!

We don't use a torque plate at all and frankly have no ring sealing issues or patterning on the walls where the studs are.

Thanks for the insight, I'm not use to getting blocks back from a machine shop and wanted to know if they hacked it up or not, I feel a little better now.

In my opinion, if it was a berry hone the dark area would be almost gone and the chamfer at the top of the bore would be shiny.

Could be from one of those 3 stone spring hone's I suppose. Had pretty much forgot about them.
