i have a 12v head broke the head bolt after a few mods apparently its common thing (between cylinder 2&3) the head had not been off ever before the machine shop took .012 off and i put it back on with a standard headgasket now ive got the money and time to do it right pull it back off and rings cut in it. IF they have to plane it again what would be a safe amount to take off considering the .012 already gone?? thanks for any help

Last figure I heard, you can safely take 0.040" off the head. One of my 12v heads was planed that much to remove and correct a botched o-ring job.

I would check piston protrusion to be absolutely certain, then go from there.

so tdc and get a measurment in the bowl?

Nope. Piston crown above deck.

However. If the machine shop resurfaces the head, then retracts the valve seats, it's all moot.
