I searched all over and couldn't find a good answer...

Had to take the cover off to fix the pump gear, and realized that when the shop put a new timing case and cover on when mine gave up the good fight, they didn't fix the KDP with the new case!

Question I have is this: since I can't just put a tab on there, do most people grind the hump down to accept a tab, peen down the outer edge of the hole or some other solution?

Thanks as always, write-up to come soon!

Would it be possible to use the tab anyway then just peen the tab into the dowel hole?or would it cause an interference with the gear?

That should be more than enough. If you do anything make sure the gear case bolts behind the cam gear are all tight.

if the new case is like the one on my truck the hole is actually smaller than what the dowel pin is. that was what i have found with the newer cases i have come across. the ones that actually needed the tab dont have that hump there.

I have found that most aftermarket gear cases are of old design. They do not have the raised area around the dowel pin hole which makes it very convenient to install a tab.

mine in a Cummins Recon engine and the other ones i have seen at work have all had the the raised design. even on the 4bt ones in a couple skid steers.

I probably can this weekend when I pull my motor if no one can get it by then

Ok here is what you most likely got going on. The hole in the block is 5/16. The dowel pin is 5/16. The front gear case hole for the dowel is a hole with two inside diameters. The half of the hole closest to the block is 5/16. Then towards the front it will step up to about a quarter inch diameter. Basically that lip will prevent it from falling out. There's a video on YouTube about this I'll try and find it.
