towing a gooseneck trailer i have the 4500 seems ok but big gap in gears is the 5600 better for pulling?

I have a NV4500 and never have a problem staying in the powerband when loaded. I don't like the idea of more shifting than I already do.

Lots of love for the 5600, too, though. They hold more power in stock form and you don't need to upgrade the input shaft unless you get crazy. It's also good for not winding the motor out as bad at highway speed.

how heavy is your trailer empty, mine is 5,700 lbs empty and the truck has 3:55s

I like my 5600 for towing always have a gear for pulling the mountain my trailer is just over 8000lbs

A 4GSK is easier to install than a tranny swap. I dont know what you have because you're sig line is not filled out...

01 with 12 valve fuel plate/slid foward and a wh1c turbo as far as i know thats how i bought the engine

Nv5600! My truck is a stock 97 12v. The extra gear makes pulling So much nicer with only 160hp on tap.

My 2 cents

160 hp? Well there's your problem right there!

Seriously, though, your truck should have come with a 215 pump, not the 160.

You own something stock?

After the 930 build, I must have been fooled. :poke:

Bowhunter: He might have done the 6spd swap. Just a thought.

i plan on the 4k gsk but id like that closer gear for pulling i live in nepa a mountain area and the 01 use to be a 6 spd wish i had the trans lol

Post 7 says the truck is an 01 with a 12v, and post 1 says he has an NV4500. Just clarifying.

OP, a swap to a 5600 isn't a huge deal. You then could sell the NV4500 and probably not end up spending a ton of money on the swap (if you do it yourself).

oh yes i will do it myself all i need is the drive shafts and the trans if someone wanted to trade id do all the work if they were in ny or nepa lol not scard of that just wanted to know if the 5600 was really better for towing i dont mind shifting

Yessir. I was referring to the post about lews930: 97 12v with the 5600 and 160 ponies.

I didn't give enough information with my response.

how do you figure? both have a .73 overdrive.

Garrett

Are they the same? The last 5600 I drove seemed more tame on the highway, but it may have just been me.

I figured Dodge did something to keep these motors from cruising near redline on the highway, but I guess they didn't. Thanks for the clarification. BTW, how about the G56? What's it's OD ratio?

NV4500 Dodge 21" case 1st 5.61 2nd 3.04 3rd 1.67 4th 1.00 5th 0.73
NV5600 Dodge 1st 5.63 2nd 3.38 3rd 2.04 4th 1.39 5th 1.00 6th 0.03
the numbers is how i tell the diference there is less gear space in the 5600 thus better for towing its like a half gear jump rather then a full jump from 2nd gear up
