Rebirth of Monster Mudder

it would probably stain it and also use those micro pores to latch on tighter so it would be even harder to wash off. Needs to be almost microscopically smooth or slick. That's why we coat the body and underside in baby oil or diesel/atf to help keep it from sticking as bad.

sitting here at work, made up my todo list for the truck....

Kinda what I figured.

Picked up the transmission components I needed today at WIT trans on my way home from work.

After taking care of the animals and grabbing dinner, got out to the shop and rotated the diff and the traction bar and finished painting them with the POR 15. I also hung up some other components after I covered the control arms in paper to keep them from getting damaged till they are put on.

Last think I did was wiped down one of the molds with some cleaner to remove the wax and it also removed the gelcoat. I'm done screwing with gelcoat on these molds. I'm going to strip off the gelcoat, shoot some primer and then paint and call it good. I've looked around this evening and see where several people have used paint as the surface to pull off a cf part, so that's the route I'm going. I understand that tech.

Got some news today, looks like my truck will be part of a sponsors display in April the weekend before my first race. So one less week to work on it....

Finished tearing down the transmission tonight, will clean up the case and start back together with the transmission.

Got a few more parts painted tonight as well and have the front diff disassembled except for the pinion.

Made some progress over the weekend and a few stumbles. Went to rebuild the trans fri night and found the sprag cage was broke, so I need to pick a new one up tomorrow. So I worked on the front diff, got the new carrier changed over with the 6.17 gears. Also cleaned up the front frame of the truck, sanded it with 80 grit, washed it and applied metal prep and then painted it this morning. The tie rod/draglink are painted, and the two upper arms of the traction bars are painted as well.

Got the diff stabbed back under the truck tonight and have the control arms, new springs, shocks and track bar all in, can't find one of the captured nuts for one of the shocks that my son removed months ago, will make a few more passes around the shop looking for it and then move on and use a regular nut or dig in my tubs and see if I have another one that will work.

My son and I also made new tow points for the truck, we cut the mount points off my old 38lb one and then cut new holes in them and will just put a clevis on each side.

We also had a new calf

It's official now, I will be hauling my truck up to the UCC / DPI Expo in Indianapolis in April to be a part of the CP-Carrillo booth...

now, I have to scramble like hell to get the truck back together before then to make it.

Last night I worked on getting the pump ready to take off, checked timing and did a few other small things in the limited time I had.

Tonight, finished tightening up the front suspension, shocks, trackbar, control arms and got it sitting on the front axle under jackstands. Removed the p pump and put it out in my truck with the 13mm plungers and barrels and taking it to Thompsons tomorrow at lunch to get it bored out, rebuilt, maxed and balanced.

Also removed the fuel cell and fuel pumps. took the batter off, aluminum plates and cleaned some of the mud off. Need to figure out the layout for the fuel cell, fuel pumps, trans coolers, battery and radiator behind the rear axle. Then I need to find some aluminum and learn how to mig aluminum (somewhere in my spare time)....

We cleaned up the engine, degreasing and mudding it, need to polish the aluminum a little bit and we repainted the valve covers while I had them off.

Dropped my pump off at Thompsons today, no going back now.... should be ready sometime next week.

Tonight, got the tie rod and drag links all installed with new boots. Painted the front break calipers and the little frame area under the oil pan. Also finished cleaning the engine and polishing the aluminum and stainless steel intake.

Had my son cleaning up inside the cab. Everything is coated in dirt/mud in there. I think he's cussing me under his breath.

Removed the rear brake calipers and plan on pulling the rear diff out tomorrow night so I can sand blast it friday while I'm off.

Went to put the valve covers back on and started unpackaging the new gaskets and we got 3 blue ones, 2 gray ones and one box that wasn't what I requested, not sure what it went too, so off to napa tomorrow to tell them I want 3 more blue gaskets.

Yep, saw their post on instagram yesterday and shared it out on the trucks page on fb

Picked up 3 more "Blue" valve cover gaskets today and got them installed. My shop was really starting to look trashy so I spent a long while tonight picking up, sweeping and putting tools away.

I sanded some on the molds, getting 2 of them completely sanded back down to filler with the DA, will need to block them and see if I need filler on them before I prime them.

Got the rear diff out, leaf springs, shackle reverse pieces all removed and ready to hopefully be blasted in the morning. Started also laying mount ideas for the radiator, fuel cell, pumps and coolers. Haven't figured anything out definitely yet, but have some ideas down on paper.

Radiator estimated placement

I was off today and thought I would get all my sand blasting done, but didn't get some of it done, had issues with the blaster, ran out of sand, picked up more sand from the town 20 miles away, blasted the rest of the diff and some small parts and then the blowoff valve had a catastropic failure.... so I need to pick up a new one before I can blast more.

Those that I did get blasted were setup in the shop and got them washed with the wax and grease remover and rinsed off with water to dry overnight. Will coat them in metal prep in the morning before I leave and then will hopefully get to paint them sometime sunday.

I did figure out placement for my fuel pumps today, just need to figure out how I'm going to mount the fuel cell now.

Ran out yesterday morning before we had to leave and got the diff and other parts painted except for the bottom of the diff and the bottom of the traction bar. Left the ceiling fans on while gone and they were dry when I got back last night, so flipped the traction bar over and as I was rotating the diff and getting the yoke on the 3rd stand, it fell off one side and ended up smashing the holy living $%#$%#$%# out of one of my fingers.... So after putting my extensive library of cusswords to use, I lifted it back onto the stand, set the center section and got them painted.

Well, planned on getting more parts sand blasted today and spent more time unclogging nozzles than I actually did blasting something. I'm taking this "fine" material back and picking more up from my usual place that I get it.

I did manage to get the back half of the frame cleaned up and sanded along with the roll bar. Washed the frame and waiting on it to dry and then will shoot it with metal prep tomorrow night.

Got part of my summit order in and cleaned up the leaking return lines for my power steering pump with an aluminum y and fitting and new hoses.

I need to do this. Tossed a bigger pump on two years ago and there's a drip on occasion...
What hose did you replace that all with? Is it just fuel hose? I was going to use some Aeroquip, but I already have a bunch of fuel hose lying around.

I just used some 3/8" fuel line I had in my hose pieces tub, need to pick up one more hose clamp for it to finish securing it.

Nice work on your truck. Congrats on having in the booth at UCC! That sucks to hear about your fingers. Been there done that. Are you brushing the POR on? It looks like it. What a slow job that can be. I feel you on sand blasting. I tried blasting some stuff in January and I had so much trouble with it clogging up from the moisture or rocks in the sand, I put it away and took it to a guy that does it for a living. Haha

Thanks, yes I'm just brushing on the por 15. Most of my problems with blaster have been worn out parts and this last batch of sand. I've had the blaster going on 15 years now. Sand blasted 2 full cars with it, and many other things as well.

Picked up my injection pump today and got it taped off and a couple of coats of paint shot on the underside and one side. They had to replace the throttle shaft and some parts were worn out on the governor assembly. Maxed it and balanced it as well as putting the 13mm plungers and barrels in it.

Picked up 800 lbs of sand from the normal place I get it from and going to take the remaining sand I bought locally back, as it's not working at all. Also got the diff cover and axles out of the rear diff and have it ready to change the gears. Sprayed metal prep and got it washed off as well before calling it a night.

Also put on the new shackles on front for my new tow points.

Managed to actually get quite a bit of sand blasting done this evening till it got dark. Only clogged it up once, had a hole blow in the hose at the tank end so my hose is another 4" shorter. Need to buy a new hose one of these days, think I've cut 3 or 4 feet out of it so far over time. Got those parts hung up this evening and washed and rinsed. Will go out in the morning and coat in metal prep and wash again.

Got the rear frame painted today as well. Finished painting the injection pump and will probably install it tomorrow. Removed the carrier and pinion out of the diff, got the ring gear changes and the bearing pulled off the 5.13 pinion. Need to pickup a seal for the pinion tomorrow and press the bearing on the new pinion.

Took the radiator supports I bought and cut out for the lower hose and started figuring out tab placement for it and got the spots marked on the rollcage. Also marked the spots for the trans cooler mounts.

Blasted the leaf springs in 30mph winds today, contemplated just throwing the sand up and letting the wind do it. Got them sprayed down with wax and grease remover, rinsed, air dried and then metal prep sprayed on it and rinsed.

Got the new seal in the rear diff, pinion in and drag checked. Carrier in and pattern checked and all torqued in. So the rear diff is finished.

Also been working on the trading cards, have a new image on the front of the card this year. Ordered 100 coozies and 100 3" stickers with the same image that's on the tshirts to sell this year as well.

Got all the blasted parts painted today, so they should be ready to put the rear diff back under the truck tomorrow.

After that, I got the 8 tabs welded onto the back of the roll cage and then mocked up the two transmission coolers on top and figured out what I needed to pickup to mount them.

Also made a mounting system for the two air dog's and flipped one of them in the bracket so they both fed and exited the same way.

Finished up by getting the roll cage bars ready to paint in the morning.
