Rebirth of Monster Mudder

That's one nice thing about these dodges engine compartments with the cummins, there isn't much spacing for mud to come up through the engine compartment. Trucks been sitting for a few days and huge chunks of mud have fallen off of it from drying out. It's about ready to be washed for the next race. There was still a bit of wet mud on the underside.

I dropped the radiator off last night to the guy that's going to fix the leaks where the side tanks meet the body of the radiator, hopefully have that back in a couple of days.

I'm going to play with the magnetic pickup and tach tonight some and see if I can get it to read better.

Well, got word that the tank is cracked on the radiator, he's going to order a new one on Monday. I washed most of the mud off of the truck today, spent an hour with a hose working the mud off it. Just have some left on the underside, I'll work on that area more tomorrow afternoon. I wired up the power windows, so i can roll them down and see to drive after the run, and to get some cool air into the truck before and after a run, since the only AC on the truck is 240 AC.

Monday I'm going to order a 4 tab crank trigger wheel from FAST to get the tach working.

I found this video on youtube last night, has alot of the trucks that ran in Cedar Vale 2 weeks ago, including my first run in class 2. My run is about 9 minutes into the video. I was the last in class 2 to run, the truck after mine is my brothers Chevy truck, he was 1st to run in Class 3 and has a 383 small block Chevy and did his rerun as the 2nd truck after his first run. The 6th truck after his 1st run is TJ, he has a 502 bb Chevy, and the 7th truck is Ben, he has a 383 SBC in his truck.

Enjoy

Yeah, I probably need more fuel, but that's going to wait a while, need to get some things done around the house and farm before I put more money into the truck that isn't a necessity to race it this season. I need to get around the base of the house rocked in and new wood flooring bought and installed, cattle bought, fence fixed, rocks moved, etc... As well as working in the garden, building a chicken coop, hog pens, working pens for cattle and horses, find money to build a shop/barn and buy a new tractor...

I picked up the repaired radiator last night, it's now got a new tank on the drivers side. I also started making the bracket for the mag pickup to use the 4 bolt holes on the center of the damper to give me 4 pulses per rev. I'll finish the bracket up and install the radiator saturday morning before I load the truck up and head to the races Saturday evening.

I had my lines built at Pure Diesel Power and were bent by Joe.

Just got home from the races in Porter tonight. The pit sucked, I ran as the 2nd truck in class 2, and was the first truck to make it all the way through, there were only 4 trucks in that class that made it through. I placed 4th in the class, I waited too long to shift to 3rd gear and think that slowed my time down.

The pit just got worse after class 2. I ran in class 3 as well and ran as the 6th truck. The 1st truck, didn't make it through, the 2nd and 3rd trucks through did, then the 4th didn't, the 5th truck through screwed up the line through the pit and I got caught in some deep nasty mud, it was up to the headlight on the front drivers side corner, I only made it 150 some feet through it. The next two trucks didn't make it through either. Think I got 7th in that class. My brother placed 2nd in that class.

The truck did real well, and am very happy with it. I launched tonight at 10psi and she took off hard, the crowd loved it, had lots of people talking about the smoke billowing diesel running through the pit.

The next race is in a week at Caney, KS

Here is a video my wife shot with the digital camera, I'll try to track down a better video of the run.

Haven't had a race in 4 weeks, Saturday is the next race. Still need to get out there and finish washing the mud off the truck and out of the engine compartment before Saturday and air up a flat tire. The race Saturday is in Howard Ks at 1pm and then we race the following weekend at Caney KS at 6pm at the roundy round track.

We had the race yesterday, it was a hot suma***** there, high 90's with no wind or clouds. We didn't stay for all of it, but I ran in both class 2 and class 3. My oldest son rode with me in my class 2 run, it was his first ride in the truck, and now he wants to build his own. He's 15 and will be able to drive a truck through the pits next year once he gets his driver's license. Wants to build up a jeep with a 4bt in it and name it coaltrain jr.

The pit was rough, but I just hammered it through there in my points run in class 2, ran a 5.48 I think, which was good enough for 4th place out of 20 trucks in class 2. I think I did manage to get a little air on that run.

Here is the video of it: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlgtUefsFkw"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlgtUefsFkw[/ame]

My run in Class 3 was a little less fast, it was even rougher and let off so I didn't tear the truck up in that run, so I was a little slower in that run.

Over all in the points run for class 2, I'm in second place for all of the races.

Next race is on this coming Saturday at 6pm in Caney KS.

The pit was pretty fun, a little rough and was worried about breaking the truck, but it held up really well. I need to finish building my tach sensor bracket and adjust my wastegate, will hopefully get both of those things done this week before the next race.

Had another mud race yesterday evening. Was a little on the hot side at high 90's. I ran in Class 2 and 3 as normal. There were 16 truck in class 2, and I finished 3rd in that class. In class 3, there were 15 trucks, and amazingly enough, I placed 3rd in it as well, right behind my brother who got 2nd and Ben placed 1st, there was one millisecond between my brother and Ben's times.

My son is hooked now, he's wanting to build an 80's jeep cherokee up with a 4bt and name it Coaltrain Jr. He ran his first race yesterday on our new 4 wheeler, he placed 2nd in his class of 18 and younger 4x4 ATV's

Here's a video of his run.

Great work, looks like its getting faster as you go. Its funny how foreign diesels are to most people like they dont think they can be fast. Ive always wondered how a Cummins would do in the mud racing. I figured the torque would be great and just run a higher (numerically lower) final drive and let it eat.

A little off topic not a diesel but I have a 79 CJ7 thats got a mildly built 5.3L Vortec/ 4L60e, Dana 300, Dana 60 rear, 44 front with 37 inch boggers. Its mainly going to be a trail jeep but they run mud racing around here at some of the fairs and Ive always wondered how it would do. I believe Id be class 2. Im going to be doing some head work, a cam, and different injectors on it soon and think it would do well.

My biggest detriment in racing against the gas trucks is the weight, I'm about 1000 lbs heavier than most of the trucks I'm racing against. I'm getting better at judgine the pits and when to shift, and just hamming it through the rough spots.

The classes where I run are broken down by modifications, class one has to be able to generate 17 psi of vacuum and class 2 14 psi vacuum. There are other things as well. You would just need to check in with what sponsoring org you will run with and see what you are allowed to do to the engine. In ours, open top vehicles must have a 6 pt roll cage. The basic goal is the lightest vehicle with the most horsepower than can get it applied to the ground.
