What is the purpose for the different sizes of these bearings?
(std/.010/.020/.030)
This is probably a dumb question, but I just don't know.

When your engine was built (any engine that has insert rod or main bearings) the crankshaft is generally a "standard" dimension...(say 2.24999 in diameter for your connecting rod). There are exceptions to this, but for this example forget the exceptions.

Now, when it comes time for your engine to be rebuilt, you generally have the crankshaft re-ground to get a clean, mark free surface. When you do this, your crank journal is smaller than it was before it was ground...
This is where the different sized bearings come into play. If you have the crank journals ground .010 from stock, you need the .010 bearings for correct a correct fit.
