The valve spring topic has been beat to death, but I am just curious if anyone knows how big I can safely go on the spring pockets on a 12 valve head.

Looking at running a spring like the Comp 26120, which has an OD of 1.445. I would assume 1.500 is safe on a 12v head? I don't have one sitting in front of me to take measurements off right now.

Thanks

Not sure I'd want it THAT much bigger. Don't want much "deflection" of the spring and you want to make sure it stays pretty much in the pocket without much movement.

I bought the 1.550 cutter and I bought a set of Comp springs that are 1.550 OD. Not the ones I have listed in the original post. I am going to wing it and will post how it works out.

Where did you get the cutter? Would you rent it out when finished with it? I really hate to buy one for a one time use.

Dude its like 90 bucks. Its totally worth just buying it and Jegs will have it to your door by like Wednesday if you order tonight. Never know if you'll have to do another head.

And a drill.

Disclamer: I am in no way a professional and this is my first time trying this. I am just experimenting. If you really want to borrow it, I will loan it to you but IMO its totally worth the less than 100 bucks to own one.

Have you ever saw a Cummins head....

Hope a hand drill works out for you, I've only used them with a valve job machine. Also did you measure the o.d. of the guide currently or plan to run different seals? It looks like it will cut it to .630, and if I'm not mistaken that pilot is for a 5/16 stem so it might be a tad loose

I plan on running either different seals or no seals. It is for my 2.6 motor. And I know its slightly smaller , but I was going to try on a junk head first. If its shaky, ill set it up on my mill.

I run comp cams Teflon valve seals. I'll get part number once I get home

:umno: if you've got the mill to use, use it. It'd be a lot easier on your valve train to keep everything parallel/perpendicular.
