What is all involed in doing head work?

Removing the head due to the #6 cross over tube pitting another hole in the existing hole. (Which I'm still trien to figure this one out). Anyways, back on point. I'm thinking about getting the head ported and polished and maybe o-ringed by a local machine guy. I was just curious, what all is involved and rough how long and how long will the process take?

I noticed I can buy a fully built head off of CPP for 3,500 but wanted to know ya'lls thoughts first
