Rebirth of Monster Mudder

Didn't get a lot done tonight, ran in town and picked up a piece of 6" x 1/8" x 6' strap to make the two archs I needed to mount the fender to it so I can bolt it onto the truck. Not sure where I'm going to put the back bolt as the area with the meat in it, I don't think I can get into it inside the cab.

After taking the pigs to the processor late this afternoon, grabbed dinner with my wife and stopped by home depot to get a new collar for my drimmel that was missing somehow. I makred out the archs from the template I made and cut them out with the plasma cutter and mock fit it and had to trim it a little more with the cut off wheel and then cleaned it up some with the grinder. It's not a photo perfect set of arcs, but hope they will work. May clean them up some more tomorrow night after I figure out how I'm going to bolt them in.

Been running hard working on the truck the last few days, I ended up up off yesterday and today, so Weds night I was out there till almost midnight and till almost 11 last night. Called it an early night tonight, waiting on stuff to dry.

Ended up having to cut another set of fender mount bars once I got the holes drilled in the fenders and found the bars curve was off, recut them out yesterday, drilled holes and got them painted today. Cut off the old fender rear angle mounts last night, so no going back now.

Spent a lot of time wet sanding the epoxy on the molds. I ended up going too deep on one front fender and cut through the fiber into the foam core. If I had time, I'd remake it, but think a well placed sticker will work just fine. I messed around last night and weighed one of the new CF front fenders and it weighed 1lb 12 oz. The fender support bar weighed just under 2 lbs. The angle I cut off each side weighed 3lbs, so that makes the old setup 48lbs and the new setup just under 3lbs on each side for a weight reduction of 90lbs.

I shot clear on the front fenders this morning and got fish eyes, so it's back to sanding on them and reshooting them tomorrow sometime. Also painted the fender bars and where I cut off the angle bars on frame.

I have the 2nd rear fender out of the mold and trimmed all edges of all the fenders before clearing them.

Also got the new CP Carrillo stickers placed on the truck today and finished making the new cover for the grill. Having a large sticker designed and printed to cover that area. I shaved off about 22lbs by making the new grill front. So I'm thinking I've shaved off almost 150lbs from the front end of the truck.

Both front fenders bolted on

It's going to be close.... Just finished my taxes, so it's dedicated truck time now till we leave Thurs morning at 4am.

Worked my but off sanding over the last few days, getting little issues worked out in the fenders, uncooperative clear coat, etc... I have the passengers side front and rear fenders now with good clear coat on them, just need to finish off the front fender with rubbing compound and buffing it. Passengers rear fender is installed on the truck. Made templates today for the new front engine covers I cut out of aluminum to replace the steel ones. Cut them out, test fit them, adjusted a bit and drilled holes and then gave them a paint job.

I sanded the other two fenders down today and got them shot with clear coat. Have some major runs on the front fender I'm going to have to work out tomorrow night and hope I don't go too far cutting them down. Had some friends out last night, he worked on my dually, changing oil, topping off fluids, rotating tires while his wife and mine cleaned the cab of the mud truck and dually up. While I sanded and sanded and sanded....

We did finally get around to starting the truck last night. Got it running, idle adjusted, shutoff cable adjusted, transmission topped off and brakes bled.

While doing maint on the dually found the passenger side front bearing assembly is on it's way out, so I have to get that replaced tues night and need to pull the trailer into the shop and check the bearing on it Tuesday night as well.

On the mud truck, need to finish the 3 fenders and mount them, also put the engine covers in place before I bolt the fenders in. Need to get the vinyl graphic from my guy and get it on the front grill face and it bolted on. Need to put a few stickers on the truck still, but that won't take very long.

Also need to packup a tool bag to take in the truck. Weds night will be fun, loading the truck, loading tshirt boxes, tools, cleaning supplies, suitcases, gbaby stuff, etc...

starting the truck....

Spent a long night out in the shop tonight after getting home from work. Wet sanded the drivers side fenders. Had to hit the front one with 400 grit to get it sanded, so it's taking a while to get it buffed out. Have all of the fenders installed, 3 buffed with compound and just need polished, the 4th is getting there but needs some more work.

Have a few things left to do to the truck. Need to wash and install the tranny blanket. Buff the last fender and get it finished where the haze is gone and then polish all 4 of them. Then I can weigh the truck and see just where it's at. I also need to put the front of the grill on, but won't have the vinyl graphic till weds probably.

Ordered the parts for my Dually, they should be in tomorrow morning. Need to change the front passenger side wheel bearing assembly, change both front fog light assemblies and put a bulb in a clearance light.

Then need to pull the trailer in and give it a once over and make sure there isn't any play in the wheel bearings.

Thanks

Well, it's all done except for the grill front. Pick the graphic for it up tomorrow at lunch and then will painstakingly slowly excruciatingly install it onto the aluminum cover and hope I don't screw it up.

Today, picked up the dually parts. Changed out the wheel bearing assembly on the passenger side, replaced both fog lights and bulbs with some 120'ers and replaced a clearance light that was burned out. Checked all the lights on the truck as well and took some rubbing compound and polished the front headlight lenses a little. Then backed the small gooseneck into the shop and checked wheel bearings. Both rear wheels had some side to side play in them so I tightened them up one tooth on the castle nut and that got them just right.

Finished rubbing out the driver side front fender, it's still got a slight haze to it if you look hard, then polished all 4 of them. Also put the last couple of stickers on the truck.

Then came the fun part, weighing the truck and seeing how it sits:

Front Drivers side 1552lbs, Front Passengers side 1474lbs, Rear Drivers side 942, Rear Passengers side 1012 for a total weight of 4980 lbs. That means I dropped 419lbs off the truck. 300lbs off the front end and 119lbs off the back. I moved the center of gravity back a whole .85". Side to Side 31.16% to 29.60% drivers to pass front and 18.92 to 20.32 drivers to pass rear

I then checked it with the driver as well and then I hooked up the traction bars. Not sure if I got them the way they need to be or not, but after I set them up the weights shifted a little: Front Drivers side 1599, Front Pass side 1573, Rear Drivers side 1063 and Rear Pass side 1015. It's balanced a bit better side to side. 30.15% to 30.41% drivers to passenger in front and 19.62 to 19.82 drivers to passenger in the rear. With the driver it changes to 30.46 to 29.96 drivers to pass front and 20.25 to 19.33 drivers to pass in the rear.

If any of you make it to UCC stop by the CP Carrillo booth and say hi.

Smart Ass garage may just become a reality and not just the company name I use to get shop accounts and parts stores... Already have someone wanting me to build a set of front fenders for their drag car. I def. need more practice making molds and parts.

Very nice work! Those fenders look great! Especially for your first go at it! You've been killing it and are making great head way. Have fun at UCC. I really wish I could have been able to make it out there for it.

Nake, im subscribing and this is my first post here. I am building something very simular. Will have to get a build thread started myself.

My truck is a 1956 4400 lb7/zf6 duramax. Looking forward to the progression of your truck and set up. Mine will be for pulling and mud bog/drag. Mainly for me though. Stumbled on your build and had to post. Maybe we will get to line am up some day!

Finally got to meet the man behind it all in person. Truck looked just plain outstanding at UCC. Congrats and hopefully she brings ya some pure enjoyment.

Dieselwrencher, thanks.

Clarke, cool will look for the build thread when you get it going.

Bodacious, thanks, glad people like my work and what I've built.

Damn, I'm tired and don't think work should expect a whole lot out of me today. Had a blast this weekend at UCC, met some great people and the truck drew a continuous crowd all weekend.

I finished putting the truck together Weds night about 8pm and then started loading it up on the trailer and packing all the stuff we were taking with us. We got on the road around 4:30 am Thurs morning. We had my gbaby and mil with us so we made a bunch of stops for them to walk around and site see. My wife thought I was being funny when I took a picture of Coaltrain in front of the St. Louis arch. As we were driving, I told her my idea. I had printed a hard back book of all the action shots of Coaltrain last year for myself and then gave one to my parents and her mom for Xmas. My idea was to make one for my gBaby as a kind of kids book. With the title being "Turbo Tenliegh and her adventures with Coaltrain" since this was her and the trucks first trip like this around the country. So we snapped a pick of Coaltrain in front of various sites along the trip there and back. Worlds largest Rocking Chair, Worlds largest Wind Chime, Indy 500 track, Lucas Dragstrip, Churchill Downs, National Corvette Musuem and the Grand Ole Opry....

When we hit the road, was really worried how the front fenders would handle the wind of being pulled on the trailer. They held up great for the whole trip. Got the truck unloaded Thursday night and parked where the CP Booth would be and then we headed to eat Supper with the great CP people and then on to our hotel for some much needed sleep. Friday morning, we got there early to start getting the truck cleaned up from front to back and getting the road grime off of it from driving 5 hours in the pouring rain the day before. As I was cleaning the truck, some dude with some weird camera contraption came by and started asking questions about the truck and didn't realize he was part of the UCC video crew and it was going out on the live feed... Then I wondered how much of an idiot I sounded like... once I found out. Mom showed it to Dad and said I sounded like a hick... told him it took one to know one. Here's the link to the video: www.facebook.com%2FUltimateCalloutChallenge%2Fvideos%2F1912228495714263%2F&show_text=0&width=560

Over the next three days, I stayed with the truck and talked to a lot of people, giving out this years and last years hero cards of the truck, letting little kids climb in and sit in the seat and get pictures taken and answered a 1000 questions. Met quite a few of the people here on CompD, could never tell you who as I suck with names.

Did catch up with some I've know for years in person and over the phone and actually met in person some of my other sponsors Air Dog, Muldoon's Diesel Performance, Diesel Performance Converters, Power Driven Diesel.

Bodacious came by a couple of times and even gave me a cool present that will be getting installed on the truck in the next few days after I get some pieces. Will post up about it after he sends me some more information on it. I was able to catch a few drag passes and a couple of dyno runs and most of the first round of sled pulls.

Sunday came and we loaded the truck back onto the trailer and tied it down for the long trip home. Took the family out for dinner in down town Indy and a carriage ride around the center of the city and then called it a night. Headed out from the hotel around 7:30 and headed back out to the truck, hooked it up and arranged all the crap around in the cab of coaltrain and the bed of my dually and swung by the PDD guys to chat a few minutes and they loaded the bed of my truck up with more of their ATF and Oil for Coaltrain to abuse this season.

I have to say, the CP Carrillo crew really were outstanding people, had never met them before just emails exchanged and the occasional phone conversation over the last year and a half. Was great putting faces to names and they really treated me and my family great. I'm looking forward to moving forward with them and will hopefully be building a new engine next year with their new pistons and rods. I need to start planning the engine build out, goals and components to use.

I took the really long road home but we had a great time until the middle of the night portion came into plan and then it was just carve up the miles and get home. Finally arrived home at just before 6am, handed the gbaby and mil off to my daughter and our psil to take her home on their way to work and school. I crashed for about 2 hours and now working from home for the day. Not moving very fast but still getting some stuff done. Need to get the truck unloaded and all the stuff in the dually unloaded as well. The front of coaltrain looks like it went on a bug mass murder spree across Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma.

I lost track of the number of thumbs up and huge smiles we got driving down the highway to and from Indy. There were quite a few cars driving alongside the truck and taking pictures as we rolled down the highway.

Loaded up Weds night after getting sticker on the front grill cover and other little things finished up.

Turbo ready to drive the Corvette at the Musuem they had on display to sit in. I missed the shot when she had one hand on the wheel and the other on the shifter, but she definately knows what a steering wheel is for.

Glad to hear you had a good time and that your trip went well. Truck looks incredible and it's no surprise it got so much attention. Can't wait to see how it does this racing season!

Finally caught up on sleep last night. Got a whole 9 hours. Much better than the 1.5 hours monday morning. Ordered a new 1.1 ar t4 exhaust housing for my s475 last night along with some weld on flanges for another little project I want to get done.

Here is our race schedule, the first race has already been cancelled due to all the rain last night and what's predicted starting tomorrow thru sat.

Very cool on your trip, and I like the idea of the book for your grand daughter. Really neat. The shirts Carillo has are really cool too. We must be going to get the storms you are going to get too. They're saying we're supposed to get 2-3" or maybe more of rain this weekend.

We have gotten a huge amount of rain starting last night. I know we are over 2 1/2 inches so far... The chicken yard and coop were flooded so had to go clear out the drian ditches we had that got filled up. Need to make a permanent fix to it. Our dry creek out back has a little water water flowing down it and the creek crossing out on the county road is a little under water.

Cleaned up the shop a bit today and put on the last 2 stickers that I forgot for Muldoon's and Power Driven Diesel. Then weighed the truck and then jacked the back up to find out what the center of gravity height is. Front the weight I got with the rear jacked up, I calculated the COGh to be 30.41 inches from the ground and 47.35 inches from the front axle center. I marked it on the truck and then imported it into gimp and drew the line from the cog forward to the front axle and then could draw the neutral line from the contact patch on the rear tire to the COG line. I wasn't off much when I made my traction bars it seems. From what I read, you want the bars contact point to be right around the neutral line.

Looks like no new 1.10 exhaust housing for me this weekend. Ordered it and some weld on vband fittings I needed from CPP Diesel. Got a notice the housing was shipped yesterday but no tracking. Called today to find out ETA and found the MFG doesn't have one and be the end of the month before they can ship it. So guess I will see if I can melt the turbo down this weekend with the 13mm pump and .90 housing. Partly my fault for not ordering it sooner, but was busy just trying to get the truck done to ship out.

May just say forget it and buy a t6 manifold and figure out a new turbo.

So, question. Who is the person to talk to and build me a ginormous fast spooling turbo bigger than what I have?
