lets talk putting a diesel in a go fast boat..

Thanks for all the input guys! I really like the idea of a dmax, just because they do run good, are quiet, and lightweight. But I don't know a lot about them, and I'm a cummins guy thru and thru. Idealy if I use a cummins id like a cr motor. I'm not super concerned wth fuel economy, but it would be cool. I planned on running water meth for sure.

As far as the motor fitting, I don't think that will be too bad of an issue, I'm starting with a hull, so modifying it wouldn't be an issue.

This will almost certianly be a single engine the more I look into it. I gotta find a cheap source for outdrives, because I don't think a bravo 3 will be taking the abuse of a 6-700hp diesel.

Any input on how well a dmax would work? I've seen motors go for around $1500 here localy. What kind of cost would it be to get to 600hp? I'm thinking prob not too much.

I'm going to start heading to some boat yards soon to look at which hull will work best for me. I have all sorts of crazy ideas wandering around my head lmao.

This would work.....

im sorry but this is a ridiculous idea unless you have 50k to blow.

Eh, I've seen money wasted on dumber stuff. I didn't say it was going to be a overnight project either.

In all honesty I don't see the price being to extreme other than the outdrive.

I can get a hull for under $2k, a motor for $2000, and odds and ends for probably another $4000.

you're looking at a bare minimum of connecting rods in a duramax making 600hp that you want to live for extended periods... plus why even bother if you're not going to at least coat the pistons and balance everything... if you want it to run cool at that power you're gonna want twins with at least a 75mm atmospheric charger.

ide say figure 10-12k in the motor...

Ha, I was just getting ready to paste a link to that boat. I've been reading on it for a while and if there getting a 39' boat to 84mph with stock 480hp 6.7's I really think a single 700hp 29' would make it close to that.

As for a motor, I can buy a complete running driving truck around here for $1500, sure the bodys junk, but who cares lol!

As for the outdrive, I've seen modified bravos holding decent, and honestly I think even a shaft surface drive would be kinda neat. You wouldn't have to worry so much about strength if you ran a surface drive.

The offshore only link the hustler tech talks about trans., and outdrive gearing along with prop specs. XR drives can live depending on the driver. If your not killing it out of the hole and launching it out of the water they can live to 700 hp but the tourque is going to be a different story. There is alot of info on that site and it has been discussed for years.

Assuming the cummins would fit in the engine compartment lengthwise I would opt for it. Mostly due to cheaper costs. Somebody posted a fuel consumption chart for a 370hp marine 12v, they are not lite eaters..

That was me. I will post a few links again in case the OP is interested.

If you really want it to burn diesel & be fast and lightweight........turbine!

1000k hp and high RPM is nothing. Probably not so good on fuel for crusing though.

This^. Find a nice Lycoming T53 turboshaft (Turbine engine) and go to town. BIG power, RPM, and burn what ever fuel floats your boat (hehe).

If you have the coin that is.

I can post specs sheet of lower power ratings for any of the engine series above if you want. Let me know. Hope this helps some:Cheer:.

Cummins are fairly heavy, I mean not Caterpillar or Detroit Diesel heavy, but they have some weight to them.

Boat, water, high speed, high torque, efficiency, safe operating level, etc. Sound like a LOT of science and math needs doing to me. Cooling shouldnt be an issue if done right. Unlimited cooling from sea water is nice!

Twin Duramaxes might be ideal. I personally dont like the idea of a single main engine in a vessel that will see any large bodies of water or rough weather ever. If that single main engine fails...you screweed and the ocean will humble you real quick.. With two mains your not completely screwed.

You could dial the Duramaxes in with EFI Live better than a high powered mechanical Cummins I would think.

A go fast boat is one place I might be okay with gas power. I love hearing big blocks scream across Lake Michigan!! Roost spraying 30ft in the air!!

I hate to say it, but a crate Banks Duramax or two might be the ticket here..

You know you can get an Eliminator 430 Eagle XP with twin Cummins diesel right? Not sure on engine model.

I think you titled the thread wrong, It should have been If I when the mega millions what kinda of boat does every member of CompD think I should buy.

Yeah, about those boats. Mines guna be a budget boat that most diesel heads will think is cool, nothing remotely close to a 1550 sterling lmao. To be honest, if I can get a cummins in a boat, and even do a respectable 70mph to start off with id be pretty happy.

On a side note, that skater I was on was amazing with apair of 1700hp sterlings. Google 410 skater and its the only boat to come up, I'm actually in one of the pics in a for sale listing. Ill see if I can come up with any vids of it.

I think I could easily build a 6-700hp 12v cummins for one for very cheap and be a fun boat for a summer. Eventually I wanna end up with a twin engine 100+mph boat.

Thanks for all the input and info that's being put up too guys.
