S478 vs S480

Been told there is a mod for my 480 race cover that is a 7 blade wheel from ED, Heard it spools better and flows more... Supposed to be great for a truck like mine with twins which is a street / strip truck...

Are all 7 blade wheels smaller than the 80?
I wasn't told that it was a different size... Even if it is though, if its better and I can still make my 800+ hp but with quicker spool, Then it sounds like a plan!!

Should I have mine modded to put under my current 62/71/13ss?

Thoughts?

We have the billet 80's and they work pretty decent. About a 20-30hp gain max, but it comes at a price. Most of our customers just move up to the 82mm cast wheel and its not as pricey. If you want a big jump in power and keeping spool around the same, swap to the GT47. RonA went from a BW400-80mm to the GT47-88, spooled around the same and alot more power.

Is the 83mm turbine enough for the 78 or would it be a good idea to move to the 87mm?

The 83m turbine is the will drive the 78mm comp wheel, but its at the edge for sure. We really like to go to the 87, or the 92mm turbine with it. Also we have the fast spooling 87mm turbine wheel which is a lower trim....spools faster, but flows about 1 lbs/min less. Not much difference in flow, but it really responds quite nicely.

Well, more power isn't really my concern.. I'm conservative on my injector size compared to others...

It's the Spool off idle from a stop while street driving that I'm concerned with, so as to keep my smoke level down as much as possible. All the while Keeping my same Power level...
Unless I can afford to someday turn it into a devoted race truck, 800-850 like I currently have is enough...

I'm still a bit unclear what options there are for my 480 with race cover..
8,7,6 blade
Billet or Cast

Whats going to acheive my goal of spool / power for a decent price?
ED said it was approx. $375 for the 7 blade mod..

Is this comparable to you guys?

Pricing is the same...

As for the 80, its a 7 blade, cast is an 8 blade. If you want a quick spooling unit, then the GT47-80 is better suited, or the S400-80 with the 92mm turbine wheel and 1.10A/R T6 housing. Its a beast...

are all s478's 6 blade? or is there a 7 blade too.

just wondering i was reading my march2011 diesel power magazine and they claim the CR truck owned by josh gruis is running a 478, but it looks like a 475(7 blade)

They do make a 7 blade 78mm wheel as well.....flows less air though and weighs more then the 75.....its not a lightweight version. We carry them as well for customers that may have surge issues with running the 6 blade as a single.

gotcha. so your saying a 7blade 78 moves less air than a 7blade 75? i understand its heavier.

whats the ideal highest PR for the 6blade 78 and a guesstimate of how many lbs/min it would be moving there?

i can see how the 6 blade might surge with the smallest of s400 turbines, people put these compressors on wrong points of the map at most critical times of producing power on applications that they "think" more boost or tighter a/r turbine housings are the answer to huge power or quick "spool"

i like the sound of a 478 6blade with a 87mm inducer turbine .9-1.1 t4. any idea price wise?

on my buddys truck we ran a 471-83/74 .9 a/r and it ran great very driveable. on the top end a little to hot for comfort 50-60 psi in the gauge.

now its got more fuel enough for 700-800+ on fuel and the stall is going to get changed higher. so i think the 478 (6blade) with bigger turbine would work great

Jose, could you PM me a price on this "new" 78mm turbo with all the spec's and dimensions please?
(Would like to know if it will fit where my S480 is now...)

Thanks

While we're all asking comparative questions....... Say you have the std 480 1.32. Is it better to jump it to the 88 or 91 wheel or just move to a gt50 with 88?

If you want more air and less drive pressure, then yes gt 50 with 88 is what you want. It has the best turbine technology.

Jose can you pm me a price to up my 7 blade 475 to the 6 blade 78 wheel? Thanks

The GT50 is all about drive pressure. Its a beast. BUT, if you don't have a drive pressure issue, then their is no reason for the GT50.
