Finally got around to pulling the engine out of my pulling truck to make room for the new one when it's ready. The truck had 218,000 miles when I got it, and I have put about 12,000 on it since I got it in 2006. Not sure on the number of hooks on the engine, but I would say at least 200, several passes down the drag strip, and I beat the piss out of it on the street. All things considered, I don't think the engine looks to bad for what it's been through. Nothing special about this engine. Only engine mods were a helix 2 cam and some head work. Here are some pics.

Cylinder walls starting to show a little wear.

Lobe starting to go on the Helix 2. Was hoping to get a couple hundred dollars out of this. Looks like its scrap now

josh, how long had the helix 2 been in there? just pulling or street use too?

Put the cam in back in 2007. Not sure how many street miles are on it but I would say no more than 5000. I've never ran any sort of additive but I always ran a CI4 rated oil. Started out running rotella 15w40, then switched to John Deere Plus50 15w40. That's the only lobe that looked like that and all the tappets looked great.

glad there are still some people that still believe in honesty and not just trying to make a buck. props

Obviously the cam needs to go but other than that, open the piston to wall clearance and run it.

Jim

josh i just tore down the 2wd the other night and after 3 seasons my cyl walls looked a little rougher than yours but my pistons looked fine.... im gonna follow jim's advice when i build the next one.... :Cheer:

Find yourself a little nervous, Jimmy ? LOL

Yep, should have stayed with the stock can. I see and hear too many horror stories after put one in for my 1/2 ton conversion. I can cringe a little more now!!! Thanks rich for bringing that up!!

The only cam I have never had an issue with is a stock one, just changed another aftermarket cam that broke this month.

I've got over 50,000 miles on a regrind now...kinda curious about how it looks. It's coming out next month...guess we'll see. I've run either Rev-X or zinc additive at every oil change...hoping for the best.

I just pulled one out of an engine last week that has this exact same thing going on. 7 lobes total are worn. 4 of the lobes look as bad as Josh's an 3 more are scared across the entire point of the lobe.

Helix 2? Or another re-grind?

Already have an engine put together and ready to be dynoed. Gonna hang on to this one and keep it if I want something to build off of in the future.
