you are exactly right, unless you have the software its a crap shoot.

The actuator can definitely be removed and reinstalled without software $.02

To the OP does the turbo itself have what looks like a plug in a hole on top of the top sort of by the oil feed line?

I definitely agree about the actuator being removable after seeing this video. Helps I have a mechanic friend with insight I just found out this week also!

I'm going to pull the turbo in the next couple of weeks and attempt a cleaning on it now that I have my TDI back. So far I can't see a cleaning port like you are mentioning.

Once you get it apart and see what is inside you will quickly realize the cleaning port isn't much help on the issue. VGT turbos can get so caked with oil and/or soot that you can hardly identify where the components are.

Doesn't take long to take apart. Air hose, some fuel injector cleaner, and a brush can get most of the crap off.
