Thailand Diesel Finals 2012...

I'd be willing to bet that Carbon Fiber does not cost what it does here though I don't know the economics for certain.

I have also been told that all the decals on the vehicles are decoration only, no corporate sponsorships in Thailand, they have the passion for racing but not the infrastructure like we do here in the states.

Like I mentioned before I believe they will do what they can to come up with the cost but they will need help.

tell them to believe in themeselves and come up with their own money!!

How well do you know the folks you are helping? I don't want you to get thrown under the bus, but I have a hard time buying that decals are for decoration.

They's only fo decorashion!

Scott Chen is my main contact, I was put in touch with him via Hoosier Tire USA since I saw a lot of Hoosier tires being used in pictures. I have only known him as long as I've been working on this. But he has a very high reputation within the company. He was the one to inform me that sponsorship is incredibly limited there. I'm going off his word. I would guess that some things are done discounted and what not just like grassroots racers here. After approaching Hoosier for help with bringing the race vehicle across and being turned down even after one of their own works tirelessly (no pun intended) promoting the brand, I can see there is a lack in corporate big boy sponsorship.

https://www.hoosiertire.com/TKOD2012.HTM

Both Chen and the driver pictured are planning to come over with the race vehicle.

I have an email out to a "white boy" who lives or used to live and race in Thailand to try and get some perspective inside the race world there from someone outside the local community but I have not received any reply as of yet.

It sounds like we need to get more folks "on the bus" so to speak..... What kind of budget does the team have to get over here? Obviously 50k would be a hard goal to hit. Hell, I'm pretty sure I could build that truck for 50k... I'd have to call in a favor or 27, but it could be done. What we need to do is get this # a bit more manageable, so folks don't run away screaming like schoolgirls.

I sent Scott an email this morning to get more details on the truck to help figure more accurate shipping costs, he is out of the office until the 26th so I'll have to wait to hear from him then. He is pretty adamant about waiting for the Visa process to be completed before moving forward with anything, which he believes should be finalized in March. I agree to a degree on this however I don't want to run out of time to raise the money. I'm putting a deadline for shipping costs at around the middle of July due to the 4 week minimum journey halfway across the world.

I will get with him on their budget once he is back in the office.

I appreciate the willingness to help :thankyou2: That's what growth in this sport is about :rockwoot:

My 2 cents for what it's worth:

1) numbers need to be more rationalized, 50k would need a large group of supporters

2) why not achieve getting diesel motorsports more popular in the US (say to maybe half the scale of the NHRA) by Raising money for an event, or supporting the build of a long time diesel enthusiast?

3) this thread sounds like the US Economy.... We give money and goods we don't have to multiple other countries, before thinking of how we are so far in debt we are about to see the next great depression.

4) politics aside, let's keep our money local

(okay that's my 4 cents)

1) a large group of supporters willing to donate very little :rockwoot:
If you've attempted something like this and have better numbers by all means please share

2) Why can I not work on this project at the same time others work on the local events, Its my time so I think I should put it towards what I feel like I should.

3) Looking at what attends the events and the marketing that goes in to them it looks like people do have the money, this will expand US companies into other countries that they may not have considered before.

4) A lot of the money will stay with US companies thus in our own economy, also why not try and get some foreign money brought to the US as mentioned above

I have nothing against supporting local events, heck I have sponsored, organized, and ran a few small events locally for the past few years out of my own pocket, I just think I can help make a difference in the international community who obviously share the exact same passion for diesel motorsports that we do here, why do I need to put my blinders on and not work outside the box...

Ok here is a little update:

The truck is valued at $113,000

I have collected information to start the EPA approval process.

A Registered Importer (RI) can be hired to assist with the paperwork and legal tape for $2500.

I have a call in and waiting for a reply for an accurate quote on ocean freight for a 40' container from Bangkok to LA and back and Bangkok to Houston and back along with insurance to cover the cost of the vehicle and additional motor/spare parts.

The route to Houston is estimated at about $500-800 more but it is an additional 7 -8 days of travel time.

I should have a solid ocean freight quote tomorrow.

The team is wanting to bring more people to up the count to 13, I have expressed concern over the cost of this addition...

They have stated that they are looking for local help and I will continue to pursue help from here. I'm also still working on them to give me real estate on the truck to offer to potential supporters.

They are still in the drawn out Visa approval process as of now.

Here are a few pictures of the truck:

Its pretty interesting and I hope we get to take a closer look at it

Do you know if their chassis is certified to NHRA/SFI specs? That may be another (but relatively easy) hurdle, to get it certed before it can make a pass here. Looking at the construction of the funny car cage area it probably would only cert to 8.50 at best, but a few additional bars MAY get a 7.50 cert.

Thanks, I'll inquire about certification on the chassis

Here are a few more pictures of the interior:

Looking at those photos it will definitely be an 8.50 cert at best without adding several tubes. In order to get a quicker cert it needs at least one diagonal in the roof and several tubes in the funny car cage area, as well as several floor diagonals that may or may not be under there.

Looking at the deformation in the bends I wonder if it would even cert to 8.50? It looks like it was bent with a pipe bender. So depending on the the tubing size (or if it is even tube, as it maybe pipe) and type used, it may only be good for 11.50.

It is cool, but not $50k and 13 people cool. More like $10k and 2 people cool.

Thanks for the input on the cage. I'll inquire about it.

You can't even get the truck alone here for less than $12k...

Update on the shipping costs:

Round trip total is looking to be about $17,000

Break down:

1 x Isuzu All New DMax Race car + crated engine + parts

From: Delivered Bangkok warehouse

To: Houston

Via: 1 x 40’ container

- Ocean freight including all origin charges: US$4925.00

- Houston Port Terminal Handling Charges: US$ 450.00

- US Customs Clearance, container dray, unloading: US$ 825.00

Race car and crated engine/parts would be available in our Houston warehouse

Duty: approx. 2.5 % of declared value (except the US returning vehicles that are being imported within three years of exportation) (This is not necessary since the vehicle is returning to Bangkok)

Harbor Maintenance Fee: 0.3464% of declared value (Min $25 – Max $485) - $485

Merchandise Processing Fee: 0.125% of declared value - $187.5

Single Transaction Customs Bond: 0.4% of (3 x declared value) $1800.00

1 year Continuous Customs Bond (Cover up to $50’000 in duty): $450.00

EPA-DOT Processing: $50.00

ISF: $35.00

Return Houston -> Bangkok is $3900.00 + $1575.00 for insurance

** Please note on average approx. 80% of containers arriving with vehicles are subject to some kind of customs exam. Approx 40% are subject to an intensive Customs Exam. Charges can range from $250 to $1300 depending on the type of exam.

Client is responsible for these charges. RORO service has less exams but still a possibility (RORO has no exam charges but exams could cause delays resulting in terminal storage charges)

** For RORO shipments all vehicles need to be drivable and no personal items allowed inside the vehicle

** For RORO shipments most ports are now charging an "Escort" fee to be allowed on the terminal (For security reasons). This is usually approx $50.00 and is payable directly to the terminal.

** For RORO, above rates are based on dimensions and weight provided. If actual dimensions and weight are different when cargo received at the terminal, rates will be re-calculated accordingly.

Add it all up and it comes out to $16257.50 before the Cargo X-Rays and inspections required.

Upon closer inspection of pictures of the chassis and cage it has been deemed unable to pass Chassis Cert. The Tubing diameter is too small and the wall is too thin, along with the bends that some of you have mentioned.

It is not looking good for this year. Maybe next if they are able to rebuild :ft:
